Japanese Lantern Earrings
Gallery

Many years after I learned the fan technique from Laura Reid's New Adventures in Beading Earrings, it occurred to me that the technique could be expanded to work in 3 dimensions by making a fan and working the ends together. Each earring is essentially a conical fan base with a second fan worked on the bottom, using the same separator beads. The earrings are finished by working a row of brick stitch around the top and bottom of the "flying-saucer" shape thus formed. Finally, a hanging loop is added to the top.
